First Pediatric Dental Visit

Dr. Ison and his team are dedicated to a great dental experience for your child.

We, along with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, recommend you bring your child in by their birthday, or, within 6 months of seeing their first tooth.

During your first visit we will talk about your child’s unique smile and ways to keep it healthy and beautiful for years to come.

Depending on the age of your child, he or she will either be given a knee-to-knee examination (where your baby’s head will rest on our doctor’s knee while their body is on your lap) or a regular exam in the doctor’s chair.

We request that you complete our First Visit Forms prior to arriving for your appointment. This helps our office keep your and everyone else’s scheduled visit on time.

Your initial exam will last approximately 60 minutes. Oral hygiene instructions will also be given with suggestions to help your child care for his or her own teeth. In most cases, we will also clean their teeth on this visit, and provide an evaluation that will outline any existing dental problems and proposed treatment.

Pediatric Dentistry

What is a Pediatric Dentist?

A pediatric dentist has spent a minimum of two years after dental school receiving specialized training dedicated for the unique needs of children. Pediatric dentists provide primary and specialty oral care for infants and children through the teenage years including those with special health needs. Think of pediatric dentists as the pediatricians of dentistry. By establishing a pediatric dental home for your child early in life, our doctor will give your child a great start to a lifetime of positive and thoughtful oral care.

Why Choose a Pediatric Dentist?

Children obviously have different dentition (teeth) than adults, but they also may have unique dental and behavioral needs. This may include orthodontics, dental sealants, extra fluoride applications, or simply a gentle introduction to dental visits. In addition to treating existing dental problems, our office focuses on prevention through patient and parent education.

Establishing Your Child’s

Dental Home

What is a Board Certified

 Pediatric Dentist?

When a Pediatric Dentist is Board Certified it means that the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry or ABPD certifies that the dental care being provided is based on standards of excellence that lead to high quality oral health care for infants, children, adolescents and patients with special health care needs. Certification by the ABPD provides assurance to the public that  Pediatric Dentists like Drs. Ison have successfully completed accredited training and a voluntary examination process designed to continually validate the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to the delivery of quality patient care.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry encourages parents and other care providers to help every child establish a dental home by 12 months of age. Establishing a dental home provides some key components to dental care for your child including...

Comprehensive oral health care including acute care and preventive services.

Individualized preventive dental health program based upon a caries-risk assessment.

Anticipatory guidance regarding growth and development.

Plan for acute dental trauma (emergencies).

Dietary counseling.

Referrals to dental specialists when care cannot directly be provided within the dental home.

Referral at an age determined by patient, parent, and pediatric dentist.
